Understanding Lice Infestations

Lice Removal 2.jpg

Lice lay their eggs, known as nits, close to the scalp and attach them to individual hairs.

These oval-shaped eggs are typically yellow to white in color and encased in a shell.

Nits may blend in with the color of the hair, making them difficult to detect.

These tiny insects feed on human blood and are most commonly found in children. However, adults can also become infested.

Infections are commonly spread through direct hair-to-hair contact between individuals.

It's important to note that having head lice does not indicate poor personal hygiene or an unclean living environment.

Head lice are small insects, approximately the size of a sesame seed (2 to 3 mm in length). They sustain themselves by feeding on small amounts of blood from the scalp and can survive for 1 to 2 days without a blood meal.

Their Life Cycle

Eggs, or nits, typically hatch within 6 to 9 days.

Nymphs resemble adult head lice but are significantly smaller. They reach full adulthood approximately 7 days after hatching.

Adult lice can reproduce rapidly, laying up to 10 eggs per day. It takes only about 12 to 14 days for newly hatched eggs to develop into fully grown adults.

Lice infestations are most prevalent among preschool and elementary school-aged children. Each year, millions of schools in the United States experience cases of head lice. This issue is not limited to the U.S. and is found worldwide.

How Do

head Lice Spread?

These crawling insects lack the ability to jump, hop, or fly, relying instead on close, prolonged head-to-head contact for transmission. This intimate contact facilitates the transfer of lice from one individual to another, particularly in environments where people gather closely, such as schools, daycare centers, and households.

Moreover, lice can also spread through the sharing of personal items like hats, hair accessories, combs, and brushes. These items may inadvertently harbor lice or their eggs, leading to infestations in individuals who come into contact with them.
